Our December concert went really well and we have already been working
on completing the repertoire for the spring. We've memorized Bach's
"Der Geist hilft unsrer Schwachheit auf" and half of Tucapsky's
"Lauds." One of the more popular pieces from our performance was a
Finnish folksong entitled "Kaipaava." In fact, a few of the pieces on
the program are from Finland; I discovered these pieces over the past
two summers and I have been impressed with the fresh harmonic style and

the expressive text settings (in both English and Finnish). And the
women of CS will be doing a selection by themselves by Herman
Rechberger
(remember "Dunk"?), and they actually like it!

All of the stops are courtesy of alums, parents and/or current
students. We're excited to be bringing our music closer to some of
you! You won't be disappointed, I guarantee it!

Yours,

Ben

2007-2008 Chamber Singers Update
Here's an email I just received from Ben Locke about this year's batch of Chamber Nerds:

Dear CS alums,

The year is off and running--Chamber Singers is duly staffed at 53
singers. The breakdown of parts is fifteen sopranos, fourteen altos,
fifteen basses, and NINE tenors! That's the most I've ever had! The
class demographic is thirteen frosh, fifteen sophomores, seven juniors
and eighteen seniors. Twenty singers are brand-new to the group, and
five more are off-campus returnees. The group as a whole has some
reading chops. They are socially *very* advanced, which means I've had

to crack the whip a couple of time about why we are holding
rehearsals...i.e., to learn the music, not to talk. But they respond
quickly and are eager to please.

An interesting side demographic is that I have eight out of ten
Kokosingers in Chamber Singers this year. That percentage beats the
Chaser record of the mid-90's. (I only have one Owl Creek.)

I'm very happy with CS, but my big surprise this past Wednesday was how

good Community Choir was! We have 116 people, a critical mass of the
membership can sight-read, and they have a *lovely* sound, especially
the sopranos. They were able to get through most of Lauridsen's "Sure
on this Shining Night" on Wednesday, and it's not an easy piece. This
is going to be a good year!

That's the quick update on choral life here in Gambier. We're still
planning a tour out east and are sorting out some preferred-date issues

for certain stops, but as soon as we figure those out I'll let you know

the likely itinerary.

My best to all of you!

Ben

A New Chamber Singers CD!
I just got an email from Doc Locke - the Chamber Singers have released a new CD!

"The latest CD has been released and is available to alums for the
reasonable, at-cost price of $5.00 (plus shipping). It is called "In
Concert" (sorry, no theme came to mind) and it includes literature from
both the 2003-04 and the 2004-05 concert seasons, namely:

How can I keep from singing - Staheli
Gaudete omnes - Sweelinck
Ave Maria - Mouton
Adonai ro'i - Shatin
I will sing of life - Hailstork
To His Music - Rindfleisch
Sometimes I Feel - Shaw/Parker
Mundi renovatio - Orban
Lux aeterna - Bartek
Gaudeamus igitur - Bremer
In beauty may I walk - Dove
Warum ist das Licht gegeben - Brahms
Veniki - Rubtsov
Mata del anima sola - Estevez
I love my love - Holst
Umahlalela - Khumalo
Kokosing Farewell"

Sounds like it's worth a listen! : - )
